Alton Towers Resort Confirms Re-opening Plans And Reveals What’s In Store For Its 2021 Season

Britain's greatest escape, Alton Towers Resort, has today (25th Feb) confirmed that it will re-open gates from next month for visitors to enjoy its historical gardens, ahead of the Theme Park opening from April 12th.


The announcement follows latest Government guidance on the reopening of outdoor visitor attractions and hospitality businesses. Alton Towers Resort will begin to welcome local families to enjoy The Alton Towers Gardens each day from Monday March 29th to Sunday April 11th. Under current plans, the world-renowned Theme Park will resume operation from Monday, April 12th, as well as offering selected self-contained accommodation.


The Resort is also aiming to have a fantastic line-up of live entertainment, celebrations and festivities throughout the year. More details to be released soon.

It is also anticipated the Theme Park's much anticipated latest attraction, Gangsta Granny: The Ride will open in the Spring after the re-opening. The ground-breaking, brand-new family attraction brings to life David Walliams' most popular children's novel. Published by HarperCollins Children's Books, Gangsta Granny tells the story of Ben who discovers that his Granny is secretly an international jewel thief. The thrilling new experience will see guests join the main characters as they attempt the greatest heist in the history of the world: to steal the Crown Jewels! On-board a Royal Carriage, the ride will whizz, twist and spin passengers 360° through a series of scenes where they will see, feel, hear and even smell an electrifying and unique re-telling of the Gangsta Granny story.

There will be restrictions on the number of guests able to visit each day, to ensure guests on have the best possible experience and social distancing can be maintained. Under current guidelines a very small number of indoor attractions will remain temporarily closed.

A full overview of the range of safety and hygiene measures that have been implemented ahead of reopening can be found here. Measures will include:

  • Pre-booking tickets: All guests to pre-book tickets online in advance of their visit to enable capacity control

  • Thermometer checks: To be safely admitted into the Resort, employees and guests will be asked to participate in a temperature check using a non-touch thermometer

  • Face coverings: Guests over the age of 6 will be asked to wear face coverings or masks on some of our rides and rollercoasters

  • Cleaning protocols: Enhanced cleaning, hygiene stations and additional hand sanitiser at key locations

  • Distance markers: The provision of spatial separation markings and other similar operating adjustments around the attraction, with the inclusion of all rides

  • Use of PPE: Additional Personal Protective Equipment and clothing for all staff

Before the first-class rides and attractions spin into action, The Resort will open its Gardens, situated at the heart of the Theme Park. Set among the Resort's 550-acre site and steeped in over 100 years of historical and eye-catching artefacts, the Alton Towers Gardens offer a beautiful spot for families to enjoy an enchanting stroll and picnic. Largely laid out over 150 years ago by Charles Talbot, 15th Earl of Shrewsbury and proprietor of Alton Towers, they were designed to ensure they held a surprise around every corner as visitors explored.

Work began in 1814 to transform the farmland around the main house into one of the largest formal gardens in Britain, when more than 13,000 trees were planted and many features installed including the ornate Chinese-inspired Pagoda fountain and the impressive grand Conservatory that has undergone a £1.9m restoration in the past few years.
